Information Technology (IT) Standardization Process

Web service standards are developed by consortium-based standard development organizations (SDO), such as W3C, and OASIS. These SDOs develop standards through an open process with significant participation and design contribution from consortium members. Even though, these standardization processes are prevalent mode to develop Internet standards, they continue to be severely under-researched. The essence of this research is to investigate web services standardization process at W3C to gather clear understanding on how organizations participate in the process, specifically different roles they play during the process. The objective of this research is to develop a theoretical framework that can explain indepth details of the standardization process. Anticipated benefits of such a theoretical framework can be used to develop model, refine and test standardization process.
